William Nicholson says he never thought he would see Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom on the big screen because it has taken so long to get it made.

Nicholson has adapted Nelson Mandela's biography of the same name into a script and was on the red carpet in London last night to promote the film.

It has taken years to get the film from book to screen, but Nicholson believes it has arrived in its best form.

Speaking exclusively to FemaleFirst on the red carpet, he said: "It started in 1997, a long time ago, and I didn’t think that we would ever get here.

"We have been through so many directors, actors and so many packages have come together and fallen apart. It has come through finally in its best possible form - which I suppose is what happens when you finally come through.

"Amongst other things we have got Idris (Elba) and he is sensational, and I am so pleased and proud about that."

Nicholson was joined in Leicester Square by Idris Elba and Naomie Harris as well as director Justin Chadwick and producer Anant Singh.

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom is released 3rd January 2013.
