Fimmel is set to take on the role of Anduin Lothar as the popular video game series is brought to the big screen for the very first time.

Warcraft sees Duncan Jones back in the director's chair, while this is the biggest film role of Fimmel's career so far and unlike anything else he has ever worked on.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Fimmel said: "It was great. It's a very different experience from Vikings - a lot of CGI stuff and a lot of motion capture, so it was a whole different experience.

"It's a totally different way of acting. Sometimes you're not actually even talking to anybody, it's just to air, so it's very different.

"But I'm excited about it - the motion capture stuff is gonna be pretty ground-breaking. I've seen some images from it, and what they can create now with computers is unbelievable."

A great cast has been assembled for Warcraft as Fimmel is joined by Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, and Toby Kebbell.

This is only the third feature film of Jones' directorial career, after enjoying success with debut Moon and Source Code in recent years.

As for Fimmel he is best known for his role as Ragnar in TV series Vikings, but Warcraft is set to send his big screen star rocketing.

He is currently filming movie Maggie's Plan, which sees him star alongside Julianne Moore, Ethan Hawke, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, and Greta Gerwig. Rebecca Miller is in the director's chair for the film.

Warcraft is released 11th March 2016.
