Ensure you eat the right foods after working out with this guide

It’s vital that you set yourself up for successful recovery after a workout and you can do that with the food you eat.

The food we ingest straight afterwards is the key to make sure we create an ideal environment for the body so that our metabolism can become faster, burning more fat in the long term.

Keiron Cronin, lecturer in health and fitness at Premiere Training International (www.premierglobal.co.uk) shares his advice on the five foods you should be eating after a workout.

After a tough workout, you probably feel like you deserve a treat such as a cake or some chocolate, but we all know that’s really not the case.

Eating foods that have natural macronutrients (carbohydrates & protein) and are high in micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are the best straight after exercising, before you stop sweating. Exercise causes our body to break down at a cellular level and we need foods that pull us out of this and promote recovery as quickly as possible. If we don’t then we could risk ultimately storing fat in the future and not getting the results we want.

Ideally we want non/minimally processed foods and/or organic where possible to enhance the quality of nutrients and promote recovery. Here are some foods that you might want to try after working out!

Fruit such as grapefruit, papaya, all berries

Why? These fruits are high in carbohydrates, which will be absorbed straight after your workout for energy.

Nuts (almonds, cashews)

Why? Nuts are high in protein, which aids the repair of muscles.

Quinoa

Why? This is full of protein and carbohydrates as well as vitamins and minerals.

Chicken Breast

Why? Chicken is full of protein to help with that all important muscle repair.

Green vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus and spinach

Why? These healthy vegetables are packed full of vitamins and minerals. These will act as the spark plugs for your metabolism.
