Daredevil Joby Ogwyn's bid to become the first person to jump off the summit of Mount Everest wearing nothing but a 'wingsuit' is to be filmed live.

Discovery Channel bosses, who picked up Nik Wallenda's tightrope walk across the Grand Canyon last year , will screen jumper Ogwyn's record-breaking attempt in May.

Announcing the news on Wednesday, Discovery president Eileen O'Neill said, "This is history in the making. Discovery Channel continues to bring live broadcast events unlike anything you'll see on television - from Felix Baumgartner's world record for the highest space jump to Nik Wallenda's incredible tightrope walk across the Grand Canyon".

Almost 13 million people tuned in to watch Wallenda's crossing of the Grand Canyon in June.

Ogwyn's special will feature a documentary chronicling his preparations for the big jump and his ascent to the top of Everest.

Lightweight cameras will be attached to his wingsuit to give viewers a "bird's-eye view" of his descent at speeds of more than 150 miles (241 kilometres) per hour.

The daredevil is already in the record books for his Everest expeditions - he is the youngest person to make it to the top of the mountain and in 2008, he set the world record for the fastest ascent of Everest, climbing from the base of the south side route to the summit in just nine-and-a-half hours.
