Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad and Orange Is The New Black have each scooped four Writers Guild Awards nominations.

Vince Gilligan's Breaking Bad, which came to an end earlier this year (Sep13), will compete in the Drama Series category against The Good Wife, Homeland, House of Cards and Mad Men, while three episodes of the cult programme have been singled out for outstanding scriptwriting, including Granite State, the penultimate show in the fifth and final season.

Meanwhile, Orange Is the New Black, an original prison dramacomedy produced for online streaming service Netflix, will battle for Best Comedy Series with 30 Rock, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation and Veep.

The show, based on a memoir by convicted drug and money launderer Piper Kerman, will also fight it out for the New Series honour, a category which also includes Masters of Sex, House of Cards, The Americans and Ray Donovan. It is also up for two nods for Episodic Comedy.

Other nominations include TV movie Killing Kennedy (Long Form - Adapted) and Blake Shelton's Not So Family Christmas (ComedyVariety - Music, Awards, Tributes - Specials), while the Animation shortlist is dominated by The Simpsons and Futurama - three episodes of each are up for the prize.

The nominees for the movie categories will be announced in January (14), and all the winners will be unveiled during simultaneous Writers Guild of America (WGA) ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York on 1 February (14).
